The Last Story Details: Battles of Attention

The battle system behind The Last Story, Mistwalker’s upcoming RPG, got a little more detailed courtesy of a recent post on the developer’s blog. Three tidbits are of particular note:

– Battles will depend largely on controlling and directing the attention of your enemies, presumably keeping them away from vulnerable party members. Kiting is mentioned as a possible tactic, described as a means of either organizing or scattering the flow of battle.

– Small zones within the battlefield will generate beneficial or harmful effects, such as healing or fire-based attacks.

– Players directly control only the main character. The rest of the party is controlled by AI, though their tactics and commands can be adjusted by the player.

The Last Story is currently set for a 2010 release in Japan, though a date has not yet been specified. A US release has not been announced.
